Every field starts out empty, and every amount is one that you enter. The tool adds up your figures, brings them to monthly and yearly amounts and works out each one's share: it calculates no premium and no rate, and assumes no price.

Nothing is pre-filled. Each field waits for your own figure, and a field left empty counts as $0. The tool offers you no average: the cost of a car depends on your vehicle, your contracts and the way you drive.

No premium is calculated here. The insurance amount is the one from your own quote or policy. The tool produces no premium, no rate and no insurance price estimate: it adds that amount to the others, like any other item.

Where to find your figures. Your financing or lease contract, your insurance quote or policy, your maintenance and tire invoices, your notices from the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) and your parking receipts. Your vehicle's fuel consumption appears in its technical specifications or on its trip computer.

Sources and method

No outside amount enters this calculation: every amount comes from you. Only calendar conversions apply, namely 12 months, 26 two-week periods and 52 weeks in a year.
Fuel per year = consumption (L/100 km) ÷ 100 × kilometres per year × price per litre.
Payments per year = amount of each payment × 12, 26 or 52 depending on the frequency. Parking per year = monthly amount × 12.
Cost per month = total yearly cost ÷ 12. Each item's share = its yearly amount ÷ total yearly cost.
